The European Banking Authority is a body of the European Union based in London which as from 1 January 2011 has the duty of supervising the European banking market. It has legal status and its primary objective is to protect the public interest, contributing to the stability and effectiveness of the financial system to the benefit of the EU economy. All the EU banking supervisory authorities take part in the EBA. The Authority, which replaced the Committee of European Banking Supervisors (CEBS), must ensure the public interest and the stability of the financial system.
